By Farrell Hamann

"When you look into the darkness of the abyss, the abyss looks into you"  Nietzsche
We place symbols between us and fear of the darkness waiting to envelope us, several are shown here.  Does it work?, possibly, perhaps not.

The Lone Wolf

As individuals, we view through the lens of our personal inclinations,  dark or light, hunter or hunted, at risk, or perfectly safe.
Sometime we joke about our dark fears thinking humor will keep the abyss at bay

The efficacy of humor to dispel fear is a common theme in human affairs.  Is this delusional?  Laughter sometimes is a fear reaction.  The question is, what is accomplished, are we safer when we push away panic or hysteria by mocking the terrors that seem to close in on us?

The Scream

Murder or homicide is considered the ultimate crime against an individual in our society.  Is there something beyond murder, more heinous than murder?  At a gut level, we often feel there is, however ill defined or articulated.  We peer into the darkness with strained eyes, hoping beyond hope that nothing is peering back.  At time like that, light just seems to obscure our vision, hindering, not helping.  Is someone, something at the door?  Was that muffled rattle the wind against the window?  Why did the sound of the night birds suddenly stop?  Why?  Do I dare move the heavy drapes and have a look outside when I know, in my heart, that I will encounter a skeletal face on the other side of the pane, inches from my own?

For all too many, deep in our psyche, we understand why the darkness has come to our frail lives.  We know what we did!!  No therapy can remove that.  As sentient beings, we invited that darkness in, thinking that the night of reckoning would never come.  Well it has and we are as helpless as small child to cope with the result of that lapse.  The darkness is outside our very door to settle accounts.   It will not leave empty handed.

Thanks!!!

Some say there is a Santa Barbara Cheese Rat or  they are one and the same.  Montecito residents beg to differ.  According to them, the Santa Barbara Cheese Rat is just a run of the mill plebeian rat.  dLI would say that the Montecito does seem to have more tude.
